CHANSON, 13 guilt calendars Photographs by Anna Daedalus, visual texts by James Yeary. 2012

James drew vocabulary from writings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Chanson de Roland. Anna’s photographic diptychs were generated from the textual dialogue of, in James’ words, “crusader and victim, bombast and humility.” The images are disjunctive land and building scapes that enact and refer to movement and human alteration of the environment. The gestural aspect of the photos also refers to time, and the continuum from Roland to the atomic bombings of Japan and our current moment in the 21st century. In photographic analogy with James’ contrasting typefaces, Anna worked with vertical and lateral camera movement in reference to bombings and medieval military expeditions.
